but God…#12

2 Samuel 14:14
We must all die; we are like water spilled on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God will not take away life, and he devises means so that the banished one will not remain an outcast.

Joab, David’s general, orchestrates a plan to bring back Absalom. Absalom is the son of David.  Using a clever woman from Tekoa,This woman, Joab, pretends to be in mourning, pleading with David to grant her son’s life. So the woman has him in a trap, having induced him to waive justice and to absolve the guilty by an arbitrary act. This was done to persuade David to reconcile with Absalom, who has been banished for killing Amnon. David was in a hard situation as king, doing what was right and executing his son for killing his brother or showing mercy. Eventually, David relents and allows Absalom to return to Jerusalem.

We are the banished ones, the outcast! We are the ones who deserve punishment because of our sin. What we learn from this story David writes about in the Psalms.

Psalm 103

10He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
11For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
12as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
13As a father shows compassion to his children,
so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.
14For he knows our frame;a
he remembers that we are dust

This is so awesome, David first explains to us that God is merciful and doesn’t give us the punishment we rightly deserve. Then David tells us tells us 4 aspects of who God is FOR US!! God shows steadfast love, removes our sins, shows compassion, and is understanding of our frailty (suggesting that God is aware of our struggles and vulnerabilities). This can only be possible because of what Jesus accomplished on the cross. Only because God sent His firstborn, only son to die the death we were owed can all of this be true. We are so loved by the creator that HE made a way!!! Now every promise is yes and amen on account of Christ.
