but God…#19

Psalm 52:5 But God will break you down forever; he will snatch and tear you from your tent; he will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah

David wrote Psalm 52 probably after Doeg the Edomite killed the priests of Nob. He committed a horrific sin, and was proud of it! David looks up and says “why are you proud of this??” Doing evil and boasting in it only leads to destruction. Working against God only leads to destruction. David knows this and calls out those who would follow that path.

We hear the same story in Revelation 12 which sets up the same story in a cosmic scale between Satan (Dragon) and the woman (God’s people). We read in Revelation 12:3-5 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.

We learn three important traits of God in these two dramatic events. Specifically the contrast between the goodness of God and the evil of Satan. Secondly that God’s judgement is real and final. Finally, the ultimate victory is God’s alone.

Whether they are called Doeg, the dragon, or Satan the point is they are evil. Evil exists and the purpose is to create confusion and cause us to trust in something, anything, other than the one true God! Evil boosts in what is not good and highlights everything that is wrong in the world. Earlier in Psalms 52 it says  “Why do you boast of evil”

This evil will be judged and destroyed, this confusion will turn to judgement, and Christ will reign victorious.  This is exactly what our focus verse says..but God will uproot you from the land forever. Also we read “but fire came down from heaven and consumed them, and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulphur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night for ever and ever (Revelation 20:9b-10) Evil will not win and we see this on both sides of eternity..first in the defeat of Doeg on Earth and Satan for eternity.

Christ will not allow evil to exist in his presence. He will judge evil and bring an end to it. Although for a time evil has its place and purpose in His Providencial plan it also has an expiration date and it’s “best used” by date is coming up quickly! Rest assured that God is victorious. Titus 2:13 says, “we wait for the happy fulfillment of our hope in the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. When Christ return marks the end to evil, FOREVER!!! The victory has been won, live knowing your future is secure!
