Matthew 6:30
But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
Have you ever noticed how busy life can become?? Between work, dropping kids off, picking them up, making dinner, helping with home work…it can all be overwhelming. Maybe you’re a kid and you have to go to school, practice, finish homework, clean your room, help with chores??? Then on top of all these things we have distractions like our phones, social media, sports, TV…the list is endless. Well I’m here to tell you that Satan loves this chaos, we read in Genesis 1 that “chaos was over all the earth,” and we all know who has dominion over the earth and that is Satan. Can you see how this works?? If Satan can keep us busy worrying about all these trivial parts of life then this keeps our minds away from our Savior Jesus Christ.
This passage in Mathew, Jesus is giving the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus is talking not only to the religious establishment but also to his disciples. I believe Jesus is making a few key points here and that is that God is sovereign over all the earth and also where we to put our faith.
First Jesus is saying He is sovereign over all the earth. He states that the birds and the all creation doesn’t go out looking for what to eat or how to grow. Jesus, himself, in His full deity takes care of creation. Why you might ask, Romans 1:20 states that “Ever since God created the world, his invisible qualities, both his eternal power and his divine nature, have been clearly seen; they are perceived in the things that God has made.” Creation testifies that God not only exists but has complete control over ALL things. Simply the God who is over all the cosmos doesn’t ask for help, need advice, or an “atta boy.” God loves his creation and everything that he made and is fully and uniquely equipped to take care of it.
This leads us to the big idea of this passage and that is where we are we to put our faith. Jesus is explaining that if He cares about the seemingly unimportant aspects of this world how much more does he care about humanity and more specifically His people. Anybody who grew up in church has heard the song Jesus loves you…this I know for the Bible tells me so. Jesus is preaching this exact song on the Sermon on the Mount. He wants you to know that He loves you and this love is unlike the rest of the world. It doesn’t come based off of works or good behavior but because in His essence He is love (1 John 4:8) This is awesome because Jesus tells us that we don’t have to be anxious about anything. When a fallen world, sin, or Satan himself through chaos at us, when we feel overwhelmed, when life isn’t turning out like we had planned we have Jesus!! John 16:33 says “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” This is the good news of Jesus for you!!! So rest in the finished work of the cross, don’t allow Satan to lure you into anxiety, instead look to Jesus the author and finisher of your faith (Hebrews 12:1-2).
