Genesis 20:3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him, “Behold, you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.”
Let me set the stage for y’all… Abraham was called by God to be the father of a great nation. Through him, the promised “seed” (Christ) would come. Abraham moved to the promised land. Soon after, there was a famine. Immediately, Abraham and his wife Sarah went to Egypt for relief. Egypt is consistently a picture of the world in the Bible, and the world is sinful and fallen. While in Egypt (world) Abraham gets nervous that he will be killed on account that his wife was “hot!” So Abraham tells king Abimelech that his wife is his sister. This is bad news for Sarah. The king would like to add her to his house with all his other mistresses.
But God…
God comes to king Abimelech and tells him to let Sarah go or die! Pretty easy decision for the king and good news for both Sarah and Abraham.
There are a few points we can take away from this. First, for Abraham, he must have understood that God would protect him and lead him. Although later he does the exact same thing again and tells the King that she is his sister. Often we lean on God for protection and leadership but hard times come and we revert back to our own inner strength. Please remember what Psalm 28:8 says. The LORD is the strength of his people. He is a fortress of salvation for his anointed one. Lean into God when times get hard, when you can’t see a way out, and find a supernatural strength that is above all else.
Secondly we see that Sarah was rescued…obviously this would have been a trying time for Sarah both physically and mentally. Sarah was left with no choice but to look to God, she was at her absolute weakest, and that is exactly where God does his best work. 2 Corinthians 12:9-10 “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. Sarah at her weakest finds her rescuer in the arms of our Lord and Savior.
Christ came to rescue you, redeem you from the pits of all your insecurity, weakness, failures, and hopelessness. In times when you feel overwhelmed and burdened, remember that 2 Timothy 4:18 reassures us that the Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen. This promise serves as a reminder that no matter what challenges we face, we are never alone. There are literally hundreds of verses that speak about Christ being the one who rescues us in times of trial and distress. These scriptures illustrate His unwavering commitment to our well-being, emphasizing that His love and grace are sufficient to lift us from our darkest moments. Trust in Him to be your rock in times of trouble, knowing that His presence provides strength and comfort, guiding you toward hope and renewal. Embrace His teachings, and let them inspire you to lean into your faith, persevering with the confidence that He is always there, ready to carry you through every storm.
